Building a Twice Exceptional Program with Expertise and a Mother’s Heart


When you are building a program for Twice Exceptional students, you cannot rely on theory alone.


You must rely on listening.


As an educator, I have worked with bright children who were quietly struggling. As a school leader, I have seen patterns emerge. But as a mother, I understand something deeper.


When your child is brilliant and frustrated at the same time, it keeps you up at night.


You wonder:


Why does something that should feel easy feel so heavy? Why does my child understand everything verbally but cannot get it onto paper?Why does school feel misaligned for someone so capable?


That tension is what led us to intentionally design a 2e program at Compass Outreach and Education Center in Fort Lauderdale.


And we did not build it alone.


Listening to the Experts


Twice Exceptional students, often referred to as 2e learners, are intellectually gifted and also have learning differences such as dyslexia, ADHD, dysgraphia, executive functioning challenges, or processing delays.


To serve these dual profiles well, we sought guidance from professionals who work with these students every day.


We engaged:


  • Occupational therapists


  • School psychologists


  • Speech therapists


  • Reading and math interventionists


We asked hard questions.


  • What do gifted and dyslexic learners need in a classroom environment?


  • How should executive functioning be developed intentionally?


  • What common mistakes do schools make with high-ability students who struggle?


  • How do we prevent bright children from internalizing failure?


Their feedback shaped everything from daily schedule design to classroom pacing to admissions criteria.


Because when you are serving a bright child struggling in school, guesswork is not acceptable.



Building More Than a Classroom


Professional input reminded us that Twice Exceptional education must be layered.


An occupational therapist may see sensory fatigue before a teacher does.

A school psychologist understands the nuance of cognitive profiles and processing speed.

A speech therapist recognizes language processing gaps that may look like inattention.

A reading interventionist sees decoding patterns that require structured literacy support.


When you bring those perspectives together, you see the whole child.


As a mother, that matters to me.


Children are not checklists. They are layered human beings. If we are going to serve high-ability learners with learning differences in Broward County, we must honor that layering.



A Careful Vetting Process


Collaboration is powerful, but alignment is essential.


Not every professional shares the same philosophy.


When exploring partnerships with occupational therapists, school psychologists, speech therapists, and interventionists in Fort Lauderdale, we look carefully at:

We begin with a detailed conversation with parents.

We review evaluations when available.

We discuss academic history and current frustration points.

We observe readiness for structured academic engagement.

As both an educator and a mother, I believe that saying yes should only happen when we are confident the environment will truly serve the child.



Why This Work Is Personal

This work requires courage, collaboration, and clarity. It requires raising the standard of what is possible for gifted learners with learning differences. And it requires listening carefully to families who know their child is capable of more.
